Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about hyperbaric oxygen therapy, including treatment expectations, candidacy, session details, and more:

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment in which a patient breathes 100% oxygen while resting inside a pressurized chamber. This process increases oxygen delivery to the body’s tissues, promoting faster healing, fighting infection, and improving circulation to damaged or compromised areas.

HBOT is approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) and Medicare for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Diabetic foot ulcers and other non-healing wounds

  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis (bone infection)

  • Radiation tissue injury (e.g., post-radiation wounds or cystitis)

  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps

  • Acute traumatic ischemias and crush injuries

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning

  • Air or gas embolism

  • Decompression sickness

If you’re unsure whether your condition qualifies, our medical team will review your case and coordinate with your referring physician.

You’ll lie comfortably inside a clear, spacious chamber while breathing 100% oxygen. The chamber gradually increases to a prescribed pressure, typically 2–3 times normal atmospheric pressure. Treatments usually last about 90 minutes and are closely monitored by trained hyperbaric technologists and a supervising physician.

Yes. HBOT is a well-established, FDA-approved medical therapy with an excellent safety record. You will be carefully evaluated before starting treatment, and our team follows strict safety protocols throughout every session.

The number of treatments depends on your diagnosis and response to therapy. Your progress will be evaluated regularly by our medical staff.
During compression, you may feel fullness in your ears—similar to flying in an airplane. Our staff will teach you simple techniques to equalize ear pressure. Once at treatment depth, you can rest, listen to music, or watch TV while breathing comfortably.

Patients wear 100% cotton garments provided by our center. Please avoid wearing perfumes, hair products, nail polish, or petroleum-based lotions on treatment days. Personal electronic devices, matches, and lighters are not permitted inside the chamber for safety reasons.

Most patients experience no side effects. Some may notice mild ear pressure or temporary fatigue. Rarely, temporary vision changes or sinus discomfort may occur; these usually resolve after treatment. Our clinical team will discuss potential risks and answer any concerns before starting therapy.

Yes. Most insurance plans, including Medicare, Medi-Cal, and major commercial carriers, cover HBOT for approved medical indications. Our staff will verify your benefits and assist with authorization prior to your first treatment.

In most cases, a referral from your physician is required for insurance coverage. However, you may contact us directly for a consultation, and we can coordinate with your provider if HBOT is appropriate for your condition.
